Important Guidelines for Patent Drawings/ Illustrations

  • Patent Drawings are preferred to be black & white line drawings. However, exceptions are there with prior permissions.
  • A4 size and letter size paper are required for the submission of patent drawings in a patent office.
  • A margin measuring 25 mm at the top and left side, 15 mm at the right side and 10 mm at the bottom of the page is required to be left blank.
  • The patent application must contain as many views as necessary to show the invention in its entirety.
  • Chemical or mathematical formulas, tables, computer program listings, and waveforms may be submitted as patent drawings.
  • For patent drawings, all views on the same sheet should stand in the same direction and, if possible, stand so that they can be read with the sheet held in an upright position (i.e. the Portrait orientation). If views wider than the width of the sheet are necessary for the clearest illustration, the Landscape orientation may be used such that the top of the sheet is on the right-hand side and the margins are left unchanged.
  • The sheets of patent drawings should be numbered in Arabic Numerals. These numbers, if present, must be placed in the middle of the top of the sheet, but not in the margin. For detailed guidelines please refer to our below post:
